Box Hill Surrey, a little bit of Olympics

The Olympics finish today, and to be honest I will bee sad to see them go. Not because I'm particularly sporty, although I have found myself following all kinds of events I never had an interest in before, but because I will miss the atmosphere.
I spent a couple of sunny hours roaming round Box Hill they was the main stage for the road cycle races, and was delighted after a long climb to find the Olympic rings on display at the summit. You can just about see the view from the hill, looking out over a vast green and pleasant landscape. It was breathtaking (not just because it's a vey steep climb) but also that the effort was put in to build the rings there at that spot.

Currently reading...

Don't worry folks I'm not reading this because I'm worried about my soul. No, I picked up this book because it featured on many recommended reading lists and I wanted to see what all the fuss is about. So far, I've found it contains lots of practical advice and is all very sensible. It's more about good sound business practise than ideas generation.

Tatty Devine Name Necklace

I love Tatty Devine jewellery, and have a bit of a growing collection. It is all designed and made in England - some of it while you wait!

My favourite piece (up till now) was my sparkly red lightning bolt earrings - I'm even wearing them in my passport photo, but the brilliance of Tatty Devine means they can produce a custom necklace so it was time I got one. Here's a ittle illustration of it:
You choose the text: I chose my name but they can do two words
The font: Ladybug
The colour: Sparkly Red (all the way)
The charm: Lightning bolt to match earrings
and the Chain: Silver
They have lovely people working for them who provide excellent customer service, and delivery, even standard class, is pretty quick. I have four weddings to go to this summer, but now no one can get my name wrong :)
I recommend checking out the Tatty Devine shops in Covent Garden and Brick Lane - I could spend hours in them looking at all the pretty and sparkly things.

Blue Skies Ahead

So in my last post I shared the idea of fighting for what you want and living your life with colour and energy. This post is about positive thinking. It's about seeing the best in every situation and believing that good times are always ahead of you.

If you can take pleasure in simple, things like a beautiful sky, then it gets harder to be unhappy. I do like to daydream about all the possibilities of what the future could bring. I always let myself believe they are achievable if I keep focused on them.

Zombie Pinup Tattoo for Patrick O'Brien

It's over a year since this undead beauty was designed (see my old blog post - And now for something completely different ) but here she is as a finished piece on Pat's arm. It's a pretty amazing feeling to know something I created is now emblazoned on a living person.
It's not the first time I've had the feeling, I also had the pleasure a while back to design a mermaid for the lovely Emma:
Still I could not be happier :)

Live Fiercely

When I first started thinking about the phrase it was because I had seen a quote that read 'Love Fiercely', but my mind jumbles things up and changed love for live. The words rattled around in my head and started to resonate with something I've been considering a lot recently. Life can be cruelly short, can contain suffering (war, illness, poverty, lost love...) and it is all too easy to become overwhelmed by the negative feelings and not see the good stuff.

I'm not saying I don't get depressed, we all do at some time or another, but somewhere along the line I've realised that I am at heart a bit of a romantic and certainly an optimist.

So - Live Fiercely
If you are going to do anything - do it with passion, give it some effort and don't be dissuaded or defeated by other people's opinions. It's been said before a million different ways - if things aren't going your way go down kicking and screaming and if you do get knocked down, pick your self up, dust your self down and go again.

Olympic Cycle Road Race

I can't help getting caught up in the Olympic buzz that's about. It didn't hit me until the opening ceremony (as bonkers as it was). I'm very lucky to have seen an Olympic event for free - the Men's Cycle Road Race went all over Surrey so I got to walk down my road and stand amongst the flag waving crowd as the bikes whizzed by.

I was a great atmosphere - even the police, support crews and press vans got cheered on as they went past. Truth is I don't care who wins, I'm not very competitive, but it really is amazing to see allsorts of people getting out there and having giving it everything.

I heart Rob Ryan

I was very excited to come home the other day to find this beautiful parcel from Ryantown on my doorstep.
I love the attention to detail, the little additions that a delivery from a chain of shops wouldn't have, even the post park is totally charming.
And on the back, a different tape.
Inside, I got more than I was expecting too. A copy of S.P.Q.R. Newspaper - a little newspaper called Senatus Populusque Ryantown, The Senate and People of Ryantown.
It's full of gorgeous images and features what happens in Rob Ryan's studio.
There was also this lovely postcard 'Believe in People'
With delicious hand typography and a pin badge on the back.
And best of all, the little gift I bought myself, even though its a little early... A Rob Ryan calendar for 2013.
I'm keeping it all wrapped up on my book case until the new year, but I am so inredibly pleased with it. Being a total fan of his work, and an admirer of paper cut any way, I think it's the best think I've bought in ages.

Currently crazy about....

These Red or Dead boots from Schuh! I have been obsessively looking at them for weeks.
The are like cowboy ankle boots with a glam rock twist, they make me taller and the have a star on, what could be better than that? I have done the only sensible thing and bought them.
To my absolute delight they arrived in a box decorated to look like a Victorian London town house.
With a little Eco-friendly message inside reminding me that I have to keep the cute box as well as the super cute box. The boyfriend despairs but I couldn't be happier.

Brighton forever

I have had the most fun visiting a place that I love - Brighton. I never get bored of this party town by the sea. I love the pier with it's arcades and fun fair, I love the Lanes with their rows of unique shops, the people all seem more colourful and interesting, there good food, drink, music and... the sea, I could stare at the horizon for hours.

I feel thoroughly refreshed from my mini holiday, I even considered moving there but would I still love it as much if it became associated with the daily grind and drudgery?

Reading Recently

Recently I have been slightly obsessing over the imagery in these two books:
London Tattoos
Illustration Now! 3: Vol. 3

I can spend hours day dreaming whilst turning the pages followed by hours more doodling.

I must not buy another notebook

I have recently completed a huge spring clean and de-clutter of my flat. I sorted through all my hoarded treasures and got rid of a lot... some stuff went to the charity shop, some went on ebay and some just got recycled. I'm left with a well organised home, I know where everything is, and I feel better for getting rid of all those things I no longer need.

To my shock and horror (secret delight) I found I have stockpiled a lifetimes supply of notebooks and sketchbooks, most of which I've hardly used - some never at all. So I here by swear that I will not buy a new notebook until I have used the ones I already own (except I probably will next time I'm in Paperchase... shh!)

After the realisation that I am a paper addict I read this clever blog, my favourite quote being:

27. You've found yourself standing in WHSmith fondling Moleskin notebooks. And in Muji smooshing them against your face.

So true! least I'm not alone :)

Out with the old

I'm one of life's hoarders and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I like having things around me that hold memories or make me smile. Once in a while though I realise I have too much and its time to have a good old fashioned clear out.
So several bags of stuff have gone to local charity shops. Some very broken things have gone to the tip to be recycled and become something new. And other things I'm selling.

You can find my collection of Rock n Roll postcards for sale here. These two are my favourites so I hope they go to a good home.

I'm also selling a few clothes on ebay like this vintage dress

Back up your back up

Let this post be a lesson to any one who stores electronic files of their work.

I tried to access copies of my illustrations only to find out they were no longer there, I reassured myself that all was not lost as they were backed up. However the only things I could recover from my back up were corrupt scrambled images that were no good to anyone.

I have closed the shop while I try to sort this out. I have no idea how it happened but I think we have to assume that previous work is written off. However I am trying to see the bright side - this is a chance to create all new work, a new beginning.

Damn you technology, but you can't keep a good illustrator down!
